Good Morning ... Captain!
Hq 2nd was in a five-day rest period in Nijmegen from 28 Oct - 2 Nov
1944. Hank was promoted on Oct 31st and this may have been
his wake-up surprise on Nov 1at. Note the grin directed at his
jacket sporting Captain's bars. At that time he was listed
as the Battalion S-3.(Regimental Operations Officer) |
On 2 Nov 44, the Hq 2nd Company moved into a defe3nsive position in
Bemmel.
Nine days later the Morning Report states "moved via foot
from Nijmegen to Oss, Holland in preparation for moving from zone of
action to new camp in France."
The unit left Oss on 12 Oct bound for Boug Lepold, Belgium and at
0600 the following day left there and arrived at Camp Sissonne,
France at 1430 hr, |
"Heading To
Sissonne"
Apparently a number of townspeople gathered to bid farewell to
the 508th as it boarded a train bound for the French rest camp.
Although we do not know for certain where this scene took place,
Nijmegen is a good guess based on the gratitude the townspeople
would have displayed. |
