Insignia Tattered After 33 Days In Normandy Combat

The 508th spent 33 grueling days in Normandy.  Days that were spent crawling through muck and mire, in and around hedgerows, the infamous "bocage" that proved to be a hindrance and at times a godsend.  If the enemy couldn't see you or get to you, that was a good thing.  The men lived in, slept in and fought in their jump suit during the entire Normandy campaign.  When they were finally relieved and given the chance to have their first shower in more than a month, the rancid jump suits were thrown into a fire.  Before he surrendered his though, Jim Wynne had the presence of mind to remove the two items of greatest significance and he has kept them to this day.

Division Patch
of the 82nd Airborne, the :"All Americans" adorned one shoulder.

U.S. Flag
proudly proclaimed the wearer to be an American ... and darned proud of it!  As tattered as this emblem is, it has withstood the test of time and is prominently displayed in Jim's scrapbook.
