General Anthony Clement McAuliffe [1878-1975], parachuted into Normandy on D-Day as Commander of the 101st ABN Division Artillery and rode a glider in Operation Market Garden, Sept. 1944. While 101st ABN's acting Commander in Bastogne, Belgium the Division was surrounded and the Germans demanded they surrender. McAuliffe sent back a one-word reply "NUTS." in what probably became the most famous quote of WW-II. Read More About 'NUTS'! McAuliffe ultimately earned his fourth star and retired as a full General.
