Jack
Schlegel was taken prisoner not once, but three, times. His
fluency in German enabled him to finagle his way out of all three
dilemmas. On one occasion he was issued a pass
from a Camp Dispensary
where he was assisting the physician. The pass,
provided freedom of movement as it reads: "Authorization
for Jack W. Schlegel POW No 12190855 is authorized to pass the Guard.
Dated
----- 1944 at Rennes ....always valid. Signed by Chief Staff
Physician"
(NOTE: The physician's
signature is illegible but the role usually has minimum rank of Major).
