PFC JAMES A. CHILDS, 39105876, Private, 508th Parachute Infantry.  For Heroic conduct in action on 6 June 19844, about one mile from Piceauville, France.  In enemy territory, and not having contact friendly troops, Private CHILDS, acting as lead scout for his squad, encountered about a company of German infantry.   With one compani9on, CHILDS fired on the enemy until his squad could withdraw.  During this action Private CHILDS continued to face the enemy and by his disregard for personal safety, prevented the enemy's advance.  In a later action, he was captured, but he and a companion escaped, bringing their German guard with them to our Ines..
