GO 19. SECTION III, AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL

JAMES G. KAY, 15382265, Sergeant, 508th Parachute Infantry. For heroic conduct in action 18 September 1944 near ***, GERMANY. Sergeant KAY was a 60mm Mortar Squad Leader, Company “H'. When his company attacked German defensive positions east of ***, he located his OP at a point from which he could observe and direct his mortar fire. The enemy discovered this position and directed machine gun and flat trajectory artillery fire in the position. Sergeant KAY remained at this OP during the entire attack and was able to direct effective mortar fire in support of his platoon and company. Near hits from enemy artillery showered him with dirt and made his position a hazardous one. Sergeant KAY's courageous performance of duty despite intense enemy fire enabled hi to give important supporting mortar fire to his company. Entered military service from SPENCER, INDIANA.
