IV — AWARD OF THE BRONZE STAR MEDAL FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE: Under the provisions of AR 600-45, as amended, and pursuant to authority contained in letter 200.6 (AG) Headquarters XVIII Corps Airborne, dated 31 August 1944, the following named individuals are awarded the Bronze Star Medal: DONALD L. KING, 36641535, Sergeant, 508th Parachute Infantry. For meritorious service in connection with military operations against the enemy for the period 6 June 1944 to 12 February 1945 in NORMANDY, HOLLAND and BELGIUM. In HOLLAND, when his squad leader was wounded, Sergeant KING (then Corporal), assumed command of his squad and in that capacity displayed exemplary courage and leadership. Near ***, BELGIUM, he further distinguished himself in withdrawing his squad without loss, leading them through heavy fire to the assembly point through the enemy which surrounded his positions. Sergeant KING’s consistently displayed devotion to duty, courage and efficiency. Entered military service from OELWEIN, IOWA.
