On the night of Dec
23 Sgt Koons, then a Pfc, had a small outpost
acrossed [sic] a river covering friendly troops
withdraw [sic]. When a large German combat
patrol supported by tanks came Pfc Koons stayed at
his position under heavy MG fire and tank fire to
cover the withdraw of another outpost which was on
his right. After withdrawing himself he
organized his squad and helped hold the bridge until
it was blown. |

from seizing a vital bridge before a demolition
charge could be prepared., |

the bridge was held until a demolition charge could
be placed and the mission of blowing the bridge
complete. |
