GO 19. SECTION III, AWARD OF THE BRONZE
STAR MEDAL
HARRY D. PURDY, 37343636,
Corporal, 508th Parachute Infantry. For heroic conduct in action on
20-21 September 1944 near ***, HOLLAND. Corporal PURDY, an assistant
squad leader, Company “H”, while under heavy enemy fire which wounded
his squad leader, assumed command of his squad and held up an enemy
advance. When the attack by his company against German positions in
the town of *** was halted, Corporal PURDY moved about the fire-swept
position to contact all members and reorganize his squad in the face
of a German counter-attack. He succeeded in restoring control of his
unit and blocked the enemy advance upon his squad position. He conducted
himself without regard for his personal safety as he directed a covering
action which enabled his platoon to displace to original positions and
reorganize to meet this enemy assault. The actions of Corporal PURDY
contributed largely in preventing a dangerous penetration of the company
position by the enemy. He was painfully wounded during this action,
but continued to direct his squad throughout the action. His conduct
reflects great credit upon himself, his organization, and the United
States army. Entered military service from OTIS, COLORADO.
