SOLDIER WINS
FRENCH AWARD
Brothers Hold Croix De
Guerre, Dutch Order
S/Sgt John Welgus, 26, son of Mrs.. Barbara Welgus, 440 East Main
street, Miners Mill section of the city, is shown above receivi8ng the
Croix de Guerre from a French officer at Paris for exceptional service
in the liberation of France. Welgus was with the famed 82nd
Airborne Division at the time and made jumps in Normandy and Holland.
In serving four and one-half years, he has re-enlisted and at present is
with the 508th Parachute Infantry in Frankfurt, Germany.
His brother,. T/sgt Metro Welgus, 23, now of the 505th Parachute
Infantry, and stationed at Fort Bragg, has also received the Croix de
Guerre. He fought in Sicily on the Italian mainland, Normandy and
Holland, and was wounded twice. Both he and John have also received the
Wilhelmina Cross and Order for their jumps with the 82nd at Nijmegen
bridge in Holland during the Arnhem fighting.
A third brother, Peter, is with the Navy, stationed in California.
The oldest, Phillip Welgus, 30, recently received his discharge
after serving with the 35th Infantry as a first lieutenant in the
European theatre.. He was in service seven and one-half years. |
