Cpl Bridges, at that
time a Pvt, prevented the enemy from entering his
squads position and crossing the Salm river by way
of a foot-bridge near the Vielsalm sawmill. |
g. |
Cpl Bridges squad was
given the mission of preventing the enemy crossing
the Salm river north of the highway bridge into
Rencheux. The enemy had reached the Salm river
and some few of them had managed to infiltrate in
front of the squad of which Cpl Bridges was acting
assistant squad leader. The enemy placed
intense automatic weapons fire on this position to
cover their crossing. |
h. |
Realizing that some
of the enemy had crossed the foot-bridge, Cpl
Bridges, with a BAR man to give him covering fire,
advanced well ahead of his covering fire, and with
Tommy gun and grenades killed one and wounded at
least two of the enemy, driving the rest back to the
other side of the river. |

j. |
Due to Cpl Bridges
alertness, courage and splendid direction of his
squads fire the enemy was never able to cross the
