SITREPS 508/1

The 1-508 PIR SITREP for 06 April – 19 April 2018 is below for your review.

Over the last two weeks 1-508 PIR focused on preparation for and execution of platoon live fires at WMP 16-18 April and Mounted LFX for J Co on 19-20 April.  On 9 April, CPT John Brege transitioned command of D/1-508 to CPT Mike Nilsen. John’s dedicated leadership will be missed, but we are confident CPT Mike Nilsen will continue to inspire the lethal Paratroopers of Delta Company. While training continued and leadership transitions occurred, one of our best, SSG Chris Hart along with his Ranger Buddy, SSG Carlos Mercardo (D/1-505) completed this year’s Best Ranger Competition in 14th Place.

Line of Effort #1:  “Fight Tonight”.

1.  Marksmanship.

The 1-508 PIR Scout Platoon conducted long range marksmanship training 16-17 April. Training focused on use of advanced day and night optics at ranges from 400-800 meters. 6x snipers were trained on both the M110 and M2010 and fired approximately 200 rounds through each.

During WK 29, 16x TOW gunners from D/1-508 PIR trained and executed the TOW Gunnery Test; three Paratroopers already qualified Expert.  This training is to facilitate the live TOW shoot on 21 April.

2.  Physical Fitness.

B Co continues to run a pre-Ranger PT program that produces results with 2LT Keck and CPL Chamness being the most recent graduates.  1-508 PIR also continues to conduct frequent road marches in preparation for a 40 km movement during Swift Response.  D Co conducted a PT competition by running up Culaconch followed by an individual and a section competition.

D Co Paratroopers participate in a PT competition.

3.  Medical Skills.

The Medic Platoon is currently training to send 9x medics to EFMB on 30 April – 19 May 18.  The Medic Platoon also participated in a week long Delayed Evacuation Casualty Management course at WACH.  This training allows our medics to provide prolonged care in an austere field environment. The Medic Platoon will hold another CLS+ class following PLT LFX.

CLS+ Qualified- 350 PAX

4.  Communication.

Thales FSR and Tralisware system engineers conducted a TSM antenna test on 1F6 DAGOR, and HQ2 vehicles using an IMBITR installed in a 20 watt IMBITR vehicle mount. The vehicles previously had a 10-watt RAMI antenna that covered the TSM Frequency band from 1775–1815 MHz, 2200–2250 MHz but had limited range of roughly 1925m. The new 20-watt Thales antenna covers the entire TSM frequency band and, during the vehicle-to-vehicle test, the 20-watt Thales antenna successfully reached 4100m in a rolling terrain with dense foliage. The test was conducted on Fort Bragg west of Gruber outside of the Longstreet gate. The success of this test led to the start of production of the 20-watt antenna that will support the IMBITR vehicular mount full capabilities.

5.  Small Unit Tactics.

1-508 PIR will conduct company collective training in TW31 and TW32 to train lessons learned during AP Hill and PLT LFX in preparation for Company CALFEX in conjunction with Swift Response.  In preparation for Mounted LFX, J Co has conducted a TACSOP review as well as static crew rehearsals and drills.

6.  Mastery of Maintenance.

The Maintenance Platoon conducted scheduled and unscheduled services while supporting the Battalion during Platoon live fires. The small-arms section has surged on crew served weapons to ensure successful live fire iterations for each company. As the focus of the 1-508PIR shifts towards Swift Response, the Maintenance platoon has and will continue to help the BN prepare by focusing on mission essential equipment. The automotive section conducted 9x rolling stock services and the Small-arms section conducted two companies’ worth of Annual Services. The maintenance platoon continues to keep overdue service numbers low, and is working hard to reduce the amount of NMC equipment over 60 days.

Vehicle painting continues this week as we prepare for the AAW demonstration platoon and planning for the sustainment of C Coy 3 PARA continued this week.  With respect to 10/20 shortage ordering, 1-508 ‘parked’ over $330,000 worth of equipment in the last 2+ weeks.

Due to high winds, the 19 April Airborne Operation was cancelled. 1-508 PIR will prioritize pay hurt/pay loss jumpers on the 26 April Operation. 1-508 PIR sent 24x jumpmasters to JRTC to serve as safeties during 2BCT’s JFE into Atropia.
