Grave marker for Wesley H. Armstrong and spouse in Section
U, 2-C ES of the Chattanooga National Cemetery, Chattanooga (Hamilton
county), Tennessee. Wesley was a native of
Chattanooga and prior to military service was employed as an insurance
agent. While his enlistment date is unknown, he was an early
member of the 508th when it was activated at Camp Blanding, FL.
Major Armstrong was appointed as the commanding
officer of the Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion on 3 November 1942.
He relieved Captain Dunning who had been the C.O, during the two weeks
since the regiment's activation.
However, on 9 December 1942, Capt Dunning relieved
Major Armstrong who assumed new, unstated, responsibilities. On 15
March 1943 the major was transferred to the 13th Airborne Division as
inspector general.
Colonel
Armstrong retired on service connected disability on 29 February 1952.
He was unfortunately a widower by that time as his wife had predeceased
him on 6 April 1950. It was she who was first laid to rest in
their plot in the Chattanooga National Cemetery
(see inset at right). |
