Pennsylvania WWII Veterans
Bonus application for John E. Brickley. Unfortunately he was
turned down based on his residency when entering the service.
John enlisted in the Army
at Philadelphia, PA on 13 October 1942 and stated that he resided in New
Jersey at the time. That may have been as simple as crossing
the Delaware River between his home area of Mechanicsville, NJ and
Philadelphia, PA but it disqualified him from receiving the bonus, at
least in Pennsylvania.
Pvt Brickley was assigned
to Company A, 508th PIR. On 10 April 1944 he was elevated to the
grade of T/5 and then on 1 August 1944 he was promoted to Sergeant.
John went through the
Normandy campaign as the Radio Operator for Lt. John P. Foley. He
replaced Sgt Hall who had been captured
Sgt Brickley was listed as
injured in action on 21 October 1944 in Holland. He rejoined the company
on 27 December 1944 and as such missed the Bulge action.
His military decorations
include the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for participation in
Normandy assault |
