Joseph enlisted in the Army at Boston, MA on 14 April 1943.

Although his date of arrival in the 508th PIR was not recorded, Pvt Desmarais was transferred from Service Company to Hq 2nd on 27 November 1943.

On 10 January 1945, Pvt Desmarais was wounded in action in Belgium.  He was promoted to Pfc on 25 January 1945.

Pfc Desmarais was transferred to the 505th PIR on 124 October 1945,

His military decorations include the Purple Heart and the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for participation in Normandy assault.
