PennsylvaniaHoward enlisted in the U.S. Army on
August 25, 1941 in New Cumberland, PA. He volunteered for
parachutist duty and was assigned to G Company.
It is not currently known when he earned his
commission but in a 1945 photo he is seen wearing the rank of

Lt. Col. Howard A. “Hats” Greenawalt, U.S. Army, Ret., 85,
of Hershey died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002 at home.
He was the founding member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association of
Pennsylvania; a member of Fishburn United Methodist Church, Retired
Officers Association and 508th Parachute Regiment Association, American
Legion of Hershey, Zembo Shrine, Harrisburg, Versailes, Ky. Lodge 41,
where he was a 32nd degree Mason, and former president of Hershey Lions
Club, handling its hospital equipment lending program for many years; a
lifetime member of “Century Club” of the Airborne Association, Master
Parachutist; and helped found and worked as a volunteer for the Senior
Citizens’ People Mover of Hershey.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy J. Greenawalt; a daughter, Laura J.
Allmond of Lebanon; two grandsons, Christopher J. Schick and Gregory S.
Schick, both of Harrisburg; and a great-grandson.
Graveside services, with military honors, wee held Sept. 6 in
