John enlisted In the Army at
Pittsburgh, PA on 20 January 1942.
A parachutist volunteer,
he was initially assigned to the 509th PIB and was one of approximately
50 men to emerge from that unit's desperate battle against 2 elite
Panzer Divisions in the battle of the Bulge. The unit was disbanded due
to this decimation.
On 4 March 1945, Pfc
Greider was transferred to Hq 3rd, 508th PIR.
His military decorations
include the Bronze Service Arrowhead device for the Aureliano campaign
and Airborne operation 18 Aug 43 while a member of the 509th Prcht Inf
Bn.
He was discharged on 22
September 1945. |
