FRED J. GUTMAN

On 15 September 1935, Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party changed the status of German Jews to that of Jews in Germany, i.e., to become non-citizens, an edict that became known as the Nuremberg Laws,

One of the effects of the edict was the rule that all Jews had to wear the star of David on their clothing so that they were easily recognized ...  and despised.

Signage began appearing that served to instill further hatred.

"Wer diesen Zeichen trägt, ist ein Feind unseres Volkes "

Whoever wears this character is an enemy of our people

"Deutsche!
Wehrt Euch!
hault nicht bei juden"

Germans!
Defend yourselves!
Don't buy from Jews!"

One of those affected by this ruling was Fritz Josef Israel Gutmann,. who was born on 30. 4. 1921 (April 30, 1921) and raised in Nuremburg. As this record attests,  his German nationality was annulled because of the Nuremberg Laws of 1935.

Clearly having seen the writing on the wall, Fritz immigrated to the U.S. On 28 August 1936, He arrived in New York, NY from Hamburg, Germany aboard the SS Mansa.

Fred declared his intention to petition for U.S.  citizenship on 30 June 1939.in the Southern District of New York.

Then on 10 October 1942 he appeared in the U.S. District Court his case was reviewed and the petition was declined, probably due to not hiving resided in this country for at least the requisite five years.

Fred registered for the draft in New York City, New York on 16 February 1942 and was inducted into the Army at New York City, NY on 25 February 1943.

On 12 March 1945 T/5 Gutman was transferred to Hq Hq, 508th PIR from Hq 82d Airborne Division where he had served as an Interpreter.

This Jewish National Welfare Board War Record for Fred Gutman lists his military decorations as including the Bronze Star medal, Presidential Unit Citation (seen here as "PUC"", and the Belgian Fourragére.

In fact, the Bronze Star  medal was awarded to him while he was with the 508th under General Order 40, Hq 82d Airborne Division.  What the medal may have been awarded for is not known but it may have been for meritorious service while acting as an interpreter.  His home address was 700 East 178th street, New York City, just a few blocks from the Central Park

On 29 July 1947, Fred arrived in New York, NY from Paris, Orly Field, France aboard Air France flight 61.  His occupation was listed as "War Dept" and his home address was again 700 East 178th street, New York City.

On 7 October 1949, Fritz, now named Fred, departed New York, NY aboard the Queen Elizabeth bound for Cherbourg, France with expected stay of 2 months (line 19). Note that he reported that he had been naturalized in Spartanburg, NC on 19 June 1943. He was still residing at the same address in New York City.,

Fred died on 24 November 2000, neither his obituary nor gravesite have been located thus far.
