Birth certificate and grave marker for Antonio N.
Guzman in the Old Glory plot, Jefferson Memorial Gardens Cemetery,
Jefferson City (Jefferson county), Tennessee.
Antonio enlisted in the Army at Fort Bliss, El Paso,
TX on 23 October 1942 and was transferred to Co D, 508th PIR as of 3
November 1942.
He was appointed to the grade of Pfc on 24 April 1944.
Pfc Guzman was listed as slightly injured in action on
9 June 1944 and evacuated. Initially in an unknown hospital,
perhaps an aid station, he was transferred to the 76th General Hospital
APO 115 (apparently then in St Lo, France and later relocated in
Marseilles). His status was changed from injured inaction to
battle casualty on 19 June.
Pfc Guzman returned to the Company on 26 June but was
immediately transferred to Service Company for light duty and finally
rejoined Co D on 14 July.
Pfc Guzman went on furlough on on 16 July but returned
late. Considered as having been AWOL he was reduced to the grade
of Private.
Pvt Guzman was reported as MIS in Holland on 17
September 1944 and later determined to have been captured and sat out
the rest of the war in a POW camp until liberated in 1945 and returned
to the U.S. on 4 April of that year..
He
was discharged on 29 October 1946 and re-enlisted on 19 December 1948.
His second discharge came in 1951 but a third re-enlistment must have
occurred following that period of service as Sgt Guzman was accompanied
and his wife and three children (see lines 14-18) on 26 August 1954 on
Seaboard and Western Airlines flight WS-5 from Frankfurt to New York.
It is record that he again re-enlisted on 28 February
1962. His last known discharge happened on 23 January 1966.
Based on the inscription on his grave marker he
attained the grade of SSgt during these later periods of service.
Antonio's military decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple
Heart and the POW Medal. |
