Paratrooper Is
    Missing in Action

    Pvt. Joseph Daniel Harper has been reported missing; in action in France since June 6, according to a telegram received by his wife and daughter who reside at 432 Water street. Pvt. Harper was connected with the parachute Infantry.
   Entering the service October 8, 1942, Pvt. Harper trained at Ft. Benning, Ga.. Camp Blanding, Fla., and Camp Mackall, N.C. before going overseas.

[Jumpmaster Note: Pvt Harper was listed as MIA as of 6 June 1944.  By his own statement after he was released, he had been captured on 10 June and may have been trying to find a friendly force before that.

Paratrooper Freed
   from Nazi Prison

    A telegram was received Saturday stating that Pvt. Joseph Daniel Harper has been freed from a German prison camp and is in England expecting to be home soon.
   He has been a war prisoner since June 6. 1944. and this was the first word received from him since December. 1944, when he was in 4-A near Dresden.
  His wife and daughter reside at  432 1/2 N. Water street and his mother at 833 N. Fourth Street.
  In the parachute infantry, he entered the service October 8. 1942, and training at Fort Benning, Ga., Camp Glanding. [sic], Fla., and Camp  Mackall.. N. C.  and before going over seas.

Joseph (Dan) Harper

   Joseph (Dan) Harper, 50, former Eau Claire . resident, died Monday at his borne in San Jose, Calif.
   He was born In Eau Claire and had lived here until 1948, where he was an Army recruiting officer.
   Survivors Include his wife, Frances; three sons, Terrance, Ronald and Larry, two daughters, Barbara and Connie, all of San Jose; his mother, Mrs. Lorena Harper, six brothers, Donald and Ernest, all of Eau Claire; Dean, Eureka, Calif.; Harry, St. Ann, Mo.: Charles, Waukegan, 111., and Phillip, Winthrop Harbor, N.Y.; two sisters, Fern Martin, Mad lson, and Lois Werlein, Altoona, and three grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be Friday In San Jose. .

Joseph registered for the draft in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on 18 February 1942 and was inducted into the Army at Milwaukee, WI on 24 September 1942.

Pvt Harper was transferred from the Reception Center, Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN on 21 October 1942 yo Company C, 508th PIR.

Joseph re-enlisted in the Army after returning home and became an Army recruiter.

He attained at least the grade of MSgt when last noted in the news.
