Edward Martin Harrell,
73, Ohio Retired Lt. Col. Edward Martin Harrell, 73, of Columbus, Ohio,
died Tuesday, March 3,1992, at his home.
Lt. Col. Harrell was born May
11, 1918, in Carrollton. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Samuel Harrell,
he attended Eastern Kentucky University prior to entering the army in
1940. He had made his home in Columbus since 1945 and was a member of
St. Luke Methodist Church, the Sertoma Club and the Retired Officers
Association.
His decorations included the Silver Star, Bronze Star with
Cluster, Purple Heart, Distinguished Service Medal, two Presidential
Unit Citations, and decorations from the governments of France, Holland,
and Belgium.
After retirement from the Army, he worked in Columbus nine
years as a life insurance broker and for eight years as a Juvenile Court
probations officer. He retired for health reasons in September 1978.
Survivors include his wife, Clara; two sons, E. Martin Harrell Columbus
and William East Harrell of Highland, Calif.; two daughters, Janice
Smith of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Louise Whitley of Pine Mountain, Ga;
a sister, Frances Cook of Carrollton, and seven grandchildren.
A military
graveside funeral was held on March 5, 1992, at Fort Benning's Main
Post Cemetery.

Edward enlisted in the Army at Cleveland, OH on 1
February 1941. With two years of college already under
his belt he was soon tapped for OCS.
On 21 July 1943, 2nd Lt. Harrell was transferred to
Company D, 508th PIR,
However, on 17 August 1943 he was transferred to the
541st PIR,
