HERBERT A. JESKE

TWO EMPLOYEES OF DAILY NEWS GO TO SERVICES

 The order "...’Tenshun!” is replacing the old editorial room call of “Copy boy!” for two employees of The Daily News who are entering military service. They are Herbert A. Jeske, who goes to the Army, and Jerry Cohen who goes to the Navy.
HERBERT JESKE   Jeske, an editorial employee for the last two years, was graduated from Lane Technical High School last June. He had been a member of the concert band and was a sergeant in the R.O.T.C. He has applied for meteorology training for the Army Air Forces in a class that opens at the University of Chicago in May. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Jeske, 3851 N. Southport av.
   Cohen was graduated from the Glassport (Pa.) High JERRY COHENSchool, where he played football and basketball. Earlier he had attended Sullivan High School in Chicago. He has been an editorial employee for five months. His parents are Mr. and Mrs. Mark Cohen, 6622 N. Ashland av.

Miss Rice Is Bride Of H A Jeske
 
 Miss Virginia Evelyn Rice daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J L Rice of this city became the bride of Herbert Arthur Jeske of Chicago IL at her home on Holt St Saturday May 4 at 8 o'clock.
   The Rev Douglas Corrlher pastor of Spencer Memorial Methodist Church officiated. The vows were spoken before an altar of fern and greenery with white flowers end candelabras holding white tapers.
   Ushers were Worth J. Cowan and Harvey P. Wilson cousin of the bride The bridegroom had as his best man Ralph N Heintz of Chicago, IL.
   Miss Vera Jeske sister of the bridegroom played and sang special selections and the wedding march was played by Mrs. Horace Moore who also played softly during the ceremony.
   The bride's only attendant was her sister Miss Sybil Rice who was maid of honor She wore a dress of pink taffeta and net with a tiny cap of pink ribbon bows with streamers She carried a bouquet of mixed flowers tied with a bow of pink ribbon.
   The bride entered with her father. She wore a gown of white marquisette with a fitted bodice and full skirt. A tiny ruffle outlined the round neckline, the long waistline and three-quarter length sleeves. Her veil was shoulder length She carried a bouquet of white sweetpeas centered with a white orchid.
   The bride’s mother wore a two-piece dress of white Her corsage was of red roses/
   Following the wedding a small reception was held for the family and Intimate friends, the traditional wedding cake being cut.
   The couple will make their home in Chicago after a short wedding trip.
   Mrs. Jeske held a position at George G. Scott & Co for the past one and a half year Mr. Jeske recently received his discharge after serving four years in the U S Army one year of this being spent overseas.

   Mr. Herbert Arthur Jeske 77 of Charlotte NC died Tuesday November 20 2001 at Presbyterian Hospital. He was born on January 6 1924 in Chicago IL son of the late Emma and Otto Jeske.
   He served in World War II as a brave paratrooper of the 82nd Airborne. He was an active member of Morning Star Lutheran Church,  Herb was a loving husband and father.
   He is survived by his wife Audrey, son Dr Arthur Jeske, daughter Valerie Link and her husband Reggie Link step-son Rick Kannenberg and his wife Annette, step-daughter Christie Hummel and her husband Gene step-son Kenneth Kannenberg and his wife June Other survivors include grandchildren Ryan and Jarrett Link step-grandchildren, Jerry Kyle and Matthew Kannenberg Shane and Chad Logsdon Rachel Hummel and Carlee and Joshua Kannenberg and sister Vera Komburger.
  A celebration of his life will be held at 2:00 pm Friday November 23 2001 at Morning Star Lutheran Church Burial will follow at Forest Lawn East Cemetery The Rev Tim Glenham will officiate the service.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Service Mint Hill Chapel
   In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Morning Star Lutheran Church 12509 Idlewild Road Matthews NC 28105 Arrangements by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service Mint Hill Chapel.

Grave marker for Herbert Jeske in Forest Lawn East Cemetery, Weddington (Union), NC

On 19 August 1931. Herbert arrived in New York, NY from Hamburg, Germany (at age 7) with mother, Emmy (26), and sister, Vera (9), aboard the SS Milwaukee after a visit with his grandparents.  Little did they realize that he would return in a different capacity.

Herbert registered for the draft in Chicago, IL on 30 June 1942 and was inducted into the Army on 20 February 1943/

Pvt Jeske helped spread Christmas cheer in December 1945.

On 27 April 1945, Cpl Jeske was amongst a group of men listed as arriving that day from the ETO,
