Thomas enlisted in the army on 10 October 1942 in New York City, NY. As a parachutist volunteer he was assigned to Company C, 508th PIR.

Pvt Kelly jumped into Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944,. and was taken prisoner that same day.   He was held as a POW until 6 April 1945 when he was liberated from Stalag 7B in Bavaria.
