James
arrived in New York, NY harbor from Le Havre, France aboard the
SS Vulcania on 10 November 1945. He hd been combined with a group
labeled as Service Company, 36th Tank Battalion.
He was discharged just four days later,
The Vulcania is considered one of the most successful passenger ships ever built. During her career she carried more passengers than any other Italian-flag ship. She hit a rock off Cannes in 1972,
was laid up at La Spezia with heavy damages. She arrived in Barcelona on 18 September 1973 under tow to be demolished but was resold to a Taiwanese demolition company.
The ship departed under tow to Kaohsiung, Taiwan for scrapping on 15 March the following year. However, she
capsized and before reaching the destination. |

S. Longstreet Section 50, Site 5163, Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside
(Riverside county), California. James enlisted
in the Army at Newark, NJ on 24 November 1942,
On 16 December 1942 Pvt Longstreet was transferred
from Camp Toccoa, GA to Company H, 508th PIR at Camp Blanding, FL.
On 16 February 1943, he was transferred to the Medical
Detachment at Camp Blanding. He did not return to the regiment.
