VINCENT  LOWERY
   Vincent Lowery, 88, died October 23, 2010, in Southeastern Regional Medical Center.
   He was a World War II veteran of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment in the U.S. Army.
   Vincent is survived by his wife, Queenie Lowry; his son, Ernie V. Lowry; his daughters, Frieda Lowry Spragins and husband Carl and Susanne Lowry Beaney and husband Gerald; and two grandchildren, Wallace Spragins and Hannah Spragins.
   The funeral services will be held in Berea Baptist Church in Pembroke. The burial services in Lumbee Memorial Gardens in Lumberton. Services are entrusted to Revels Funeral Home of Pembroke.
 

 

Vincent registered for the draft at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on 30 June 1942 and enlisted in the Army at Philadelphia, PA on 18 November 1942.

The date of his arrival in the 508th is not shown on available morning reports but on 2 February 1943, Pvt Lowery was listed as being in Camp Blanding station hospital.

On 26 October 1943 Pvt Lowery was transferred from the Rear Detachment, Camp Mackall, NC to Hq 2nd, 508th PIR, also at Camp Mackall..

He then departed on a 10-day furlough on 29 October. returning on 7 November.

Pvt Lowery was wounded in action on 3 July 1944 and returned to the company on 18 July.

But it was not until September that he was listed as a casualty in the hometown newspaper

[The Robesonian, Lumberton, NC, 15 Sep 1944, Fri, Page 1].

Pvt Lowery was wounded in action a second time, in Belgium on 1 January 1945.  It is not clear when he returned to duty but his name was included on a roster of Hq 2nde enlisted men which was prepared on 20 September 1945.

 Vincent submitted this application for the Pennsylvania WWII Veterans Bonus on 8 March 1950. He was credited with 14 months of domestic duty and 22 months of foreign service which equated to a $430 bonus award.

He was discharged at the Indiantown Gap Military Reservation on 7 November 1945.

His military decorations include the Purple Heart with 1 oak leaf cluster and the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for participation in Normandy assault
