Paul L. Lucas enlisted in the Army in New York City, NY on
7 September 1940. Sometime after he completed basic training and
had joined an unknown unit he volunteered for parachutist duty.
Paul probably went through jump school at Fort Benning
before being shipped overseas where he ended up in Replacement Depot #8. It
was on April 6, 1944 that the "repelle depple" transferred him to Company
C, 508th PIR which was then in Nottingham, England.
Exactly two months later Pvt Lucas was captured in
Normandy and sent to a German POW camp, he may well have gone through a
progression of camps as he was moved away from the front.
Roughly a year later he was liberated from Stalag 4D
and back into the hands of the U.S.
Military where he was processed out and sent home. As the
documents above attest, he left Le Havre France on the SS Vulcania and
arrived in New York City on November 10, 1945.
Paul died on August 15 2001 in Broadway (Lee County),
North Carolina. His final resting place has not yet been located. |
