LUIS A.  LUCERO

   LUCERO Luis A. Lucero, 83, a resident of Rio Rancho for the past five years, coming to Rio Rancho from Los Alamos, passed away on Tuesday, January 4, 2000.
   Luis was born November 9, 1916, the son of Abel E. and Ursula Garcia Lucero in Los Luceros, New Mexico. He had been an Explosive Specialist with the Los Alamos National Laboratories before retiring.
   Luis served in the US Army during WWII as a paratrooper. He was a member of the American Legion Post 90 and the VFW.
   Luis was married to Margaret Ulibarri on March 23, 1944 at the St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret Lucero of Rio Rancho; four children, Theresa A. Lucero of Albuquerque, Patricia L Ytuarte and husband, Edward of Santa Fe, L. Anthony Lucero and wife, Janell of Los Osos, CA, Marcel U. Lucero and wife, Eleanor of Rio Rancho; three sisters, Ursula Ortiz and husband, Candido, Delia Sedillo and husband, Johnny, Alice Gomez and husband, Frank; two brothers, Fred Lucero and wife, Emily and Claude Lucero and wife, Virginia; eight grandchildren, Paul Ytuarte, Kenneth Ytuarte, Bryan Ytuarte, Gabriel Lucero, Nicolas Lucero, Emily Lucero, Marcel Lucero Jr., and Stewart Lucero; one great-grandson, Alex Ytuarte.
   The visitation will be held on Thursday, January 6, 2000, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the Rosary being recited at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Vista Verde Mortuary, Sara Rd., at Meadowlark Ln., Rio Rancho.
   The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 7, 2000, 12:30 p.m., at St. Francis Cathedral in Santa Fe with the Rev. Jerome Martinez y Alire as the celebrant. Interment will follow in the Rational Cemetery in Santa Fe. Arrangements by Vista Verdi Mortuary, Rio Rancho.

Luis registered for the draft in Santa Fe, NM on 16 October 1940 and was inducted into the Army at Santa Fe, NM on 2 June 1942.

Luis married Margaret Dorothy Ulibarri in the St. Francis Cathedral, Santa Fe, NM on 25 March 1944.

Pfc Lucero was transferred from the 551st PIR to Company H, 508th PIR on 29 January 1945.

On 3 March 1945, Pfc Lucero was evacuated to a field hospital classed as a non-combat injury. He returned to the company on 10 March 1945.

Luis was discharged on 11 November 1945.

His military decorations include the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for the Southern France Campaign and Airborne Operations
