Pfc Jack Pippin
Wounded In France Word was received Saturday that PFC Jack
Pippin, a member of paratrooper infantry, of Roan Mountain, has been wounded in
France. He entered the service in 1943 and has been overseas for $ months.
Private Pippin Is the son of
Frank Pippin of Roan Mountain. He has three other brothers in service. Frank, Hayes and Dana. His wife
Mrs. Martha Pippin lives at Roan Mountain RFD 1.

SSgt John Parker of the local recruiting office announced yesterday three men have enlisted in the regular Army from this station tne men are: Jack P Pippin 33 of Roan Mountain a veteran of nine years service in the regular Army has re-enlisted for three years in the airborne forces As yet he has received no special outfit assignment Pippin was a veteran of the famous 82nd Airborne Division which served in the European theatre He was awarded the purple heart and many other citations

Korean Orphans Made-Happy With Local Christmas Gifts
A Children of the Oryo Orphanage in Korea were made happy
at Christmas time with gifts from the Loyal Christian Workers of the East Freewill Baptist Church. Clothing-of all types was sent to
Jack Pippin who is serving with the U S Army there and who it tie brother of
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pippin of South Main Street, sponsors of the group of young Christian workers,
The warm clothing was presented to children of the Oryu Orphanage m Oryudong
Kyung- gi-Do, Korea where Suk Do Song is the superintendent.
She wrote the following letter to the local Pippins. “We have received you'
gift package through Mr. Jack P. Pippin. was-very nice of you -to
send us such a nice gift parcel for our children. They helped
us a lot to go through the cold winter and I am at quite a loss to
fully thank you for your thoughtfulness."
"I was very glad to learn that your husband and you are also
grateful sponsors. It is through your assistance, both
spiritual and physical that we can maintain this little Home
for war orphan.”
"I am trying my best to make a better place for them
to live in but it has-been only three years here and still
has to be quite dependent on the outside aid. It is true that any charity organization supported by
their sponsors but it is also true that it should have if s own way of living to be self-sufficient someday.”
“When I started this Home I had nothing on hand except a piece of farmland I had to
convert a chicken shed to a dormitory for children’s use and- build new buildings to accommodate ever increasing war
orphans. Besides hundred-and-twenty children here are quite
number of poultry and livestock. After schooling the children learn
how to take care of these

animals and on the other hand they produce eggs milk
and more of their kind for us. Thus we are getting along alright.”

The eighteenth anniversary of D-Day was particularly significant to Master Sergeant Jack P Pippin when he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievements in World War II.
In a special military ceremony in front of First Regiment Headquarters, Sgt Pippin was honored with a color
guard and the medal’s presentation to him by Brigadier General Loris R Cochran" Deputy Commanding General, Fort Jackson/
Gen Cochran while pinning the medal on Sgt Pippin commented on the significance of the date “Do you know what day this is7
It’s the 18th anniversary of D-Day" Paying tribute to Sgt Pippin were the Regimental Staff Officers and members of the S-4 Section where Sgt Pippin has served as Non-commissioned Officer in Charge during his tour of duty

The medal was awarded by executive order of February 4 1944 “for meritorious achievement in ground operations against the enemy in the
European Theater on or about 22 August 1945."
At the time Pippin was Private First Class serving with the 513th
Parachute Infantry Regiment.
Sgt Pippin of Headquarters and Headquarters Company First Training Regiment has been in the Army since August 1943. He will leave soon for an assignment in Europe.

services for Master Sgt Jack P. Pippin retired, 72, Elizabethton, who died
Saturday Oct 15 1988 will be held at 2 p.m. Monday from the Sunset Chapel
of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with the Rev William L Swafford officiating.
Music will be by Mr. Lewis Garrison soloist and Mr. David Arnev organist.
Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Hope, Happy Valley Memorial
Park Military honors will be accorded by the honor guard from Fort Campbell, Kv. Honorary pallbearers will be friends and neighbors.
The family will receive friends in the funeral chapel from 7-8 pm Sunday
Hathaway-Percy Sunset Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

retired 72, Elizabethton died Saturday Oct -15 1988 after a brief illness.
He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Frank and Okie
Hayes Pippin Sr.
Mr. Pippin was a World War II and Korean War Army veteran with 20 years
service He was of the Christian faith/
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Martha Angell Pippin two brothers Frank
Pippin Elizabethton and Duane Pippin Roan Mountain and several nieces
and nephews
