JAMES ROBERTS
RUM CREEK, W.Va. —
James Carl Roberts, 81, went to be
with the Lord Tuesday. February 28, 2006.
Born in
Nolan, he was a son of the late Willard and Dixie Blevins Roberts, He was
also preceded in death by his son, James "Crow" Curl Roberts Jr., and his
brothers, Zenis “Zene” Roberts and William "Bill" Roberts
Jim lived most of his life at Rum Creek, except for when .he proudly
served his country in the U.S. Army from 1940-1946. A member of the 82nd
Airborne, 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment. HQ Co., 1st Battalion. Jim
specialized in the 81 mm mortar. He participated in two combat jumps, the
Normandy Invasion a! St., Mere Iglese [sic] and Operation Market Garden at
Grosbeak, [sic] Holland, and served at the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He
was awarded the Bronze Star with the "V" device (for valor) for
outstanding service in many special missions at the Bulge. He remained in
the Army after World War II and was a jump instructor at Fort Benning,
Ga., until he met Edith Josephine Lowe, who became his loving wife of 59
years. He then left the Army, returning with Edith to the mountains of
West Virginia to raise their family. |
A proud member of UMWA District 17,
Jim as a motorman in the coal mines for 37 years. He was a former elder
and deacon of Yolyn Community Church and the lead singer in The Yolyn
Quartet.
In addition to his wile, Edith
Josephine Roberts, survivors include his children Dixie Yvonne (Michael)
Bell of Raleigh, N.C. Darrell Edward (Connie) Roberts of Whitman,
Deborah Lynn (Clifford) Adkins of Logan, Sheila Rena
(Shane) Chambers of Welcome N.C., and Sherri LaDonna
(Thomas) McAleer and Dorothy Roberts (the late Crow's wife), both of
Julian; one brother, Walter Roberts of Chicago, III; sisters, Anna Rose
Prather of Ohio, Mary Helen Pritchard of Branchland, and Shelby Jean Jones
of Laurel. Md.; special nieces, Phyllis Gay Adams, and Dana LaVonne Black;
nephew, William "Billy" Roberts Jr.; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grand-
children, and many additional nieces and nephews, all so special and too
many to mention by name.
Jim’s enduring love will remain with the family forever, as his special
memories will be shared from generation to generation.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 5, at the James Funeral
Home at Aracoma with Rev. Alfred Setser officiating. Burial will follow at
Lowe's Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be James Carl Roberts III, Sam Sluss II, Joshua Sluss,
Eric Sluss, Roger Hobbs Jr., and William "Billy" Roberts Jr.
Honorary pallbearers include Darrell Edward Roberts Jr., Thomas P,
McAleer Jr., Clifford Daniel Adkins and Ted Hicks,
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
James Funeral Home of Aracoma is in charge of the arrangements.
James Carl Roberts, you leave a legacy of love
(hat no mortal man can ever surpass! We will never say goodbye, but
instead, we will see you on the other side. We love you!
