MISS MARY DeFRANCE
WEDS LT. ROSWELL ROUND

   Miss Mary Hewson DeFrance of Stockwell, Kingston, R. I, became the bride of Lieut. Roswell Emory Round, Jr., of West Point N.' Y., at a wedding ceremony in the Dixie Fiefer Memorial Chapel at Quonset Point, R. I., on Wednesday afternoon, June 7, at 2 o'clock.
   The Rev. Carl H. Richardson, rector of the Church of the Ascension .of [Wakefield,] R, I, performed the ceremony. The bride was given in marriage by her father, Dr. Jesse A. DeFrance, professor of landscape gardening and agronomy at Rhode Island State College.
   The brides gown was of ivory satin, with sweetheart neck and long sleeves embroidered with seed pearls, and a court train. She wore a Chinese embroidered veil, and carried a bouquet of gardenias, orchid and stephanotis.
   Miss Penelope Cruden, of Greens Comers, East Greenwich, R, I, was maid of honor. She wore a gown of white net and embroidered organdie over yellow taffeta and a crown of red roses. Her bouquet was of red roses.
   Bridesmaids were Miss Ann Moran, of Block Island, R. I., Mrs. Carl Holmberg, of Narragansett, R. I.; Miss Sally Perkins, of Saunderstown, R. I..; Miss Mary Fitch, of New York City, and Miss Eleanor DeFrance, her sister. Their gowns were like that of the maid of honor's.
   Lieut. David Monihan, of West Point, was the best man. Ushers were Lieut. Frank Zagorski of Meridian, Conn,; Lieut. Ross May field of Hayden, Ariz.; Mr. Victor Atkins of Selma, Ala., and Mr. Rudolph DeFrance, the brides brother.
   Mrs. DeFrance wore a rose beige lace gown, with orchid hat and matching accessories, and Mrs. Round chose an aqua gown, with rose hat and matching accessories.
   A reception was held at Stockwell, after which the couple left on a short trip.
   The brides traveling costume was a natural shantung suit with cocoa accessories. They will live at Fort Benning, Ga.
   The bride, who attended St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Va., and Katherine Gibbs School, is a grand niece of the' late Robert E Booraem, of New York City and the late Dr. Addinell Hewson, of Philadelphia. She is the great granddaughter of Judge Allison DeFrance, of Golden, Colorado, and granddaughter of the late Rudolph M. Booraem, of Fort Collins, Co., who was associated with the Great Western Sugar Company.
   Lieutenant Round, who was graduated on June 6 from the U. S. Military Academy, is the son of Colonel and Mrs. Roswell Emory Round, of Fort Knox, Kentucky. He attended Sullivan preparatory school in Washington, D C. The 'family has a wide acquaintance in Selma, where Col. Round was stationed at Craig Field during World War II.

   Roswell Emory Round, Jr., Brigadier General, US Army, Retired, died on 5 December 2017 in Sarasota, Florida at age 89.
   He was born on 10 December 1927 at Fort Benning, Georgia, into an Army family, first son of Lt. Roswell E. Round and Louise M. Round.
  Before reaching his tenth birthday, he had traveled with his parents to The Philippines, Panama, Japan, China and The Territory of Hawaii.
   Ros graduated from high school in Manassas, VA, in 1945. While in school, he ran on the track team and was quarterback on the football team. After graduation, he enrolled in Sullivan's Preparatory School in Washington DC where he met Miss Mary Hewson DeFrance of Kingston, RI, who was attending St. Agnes School in Alexandria, VA.
   Ros and Mary married after his graduation from West Point in June, 1950. At graduation, Ros requested assignment to the parachute infantry and the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC.
   After graduation from jump school, he embarked on a thirty-year career in the Army that included assignments in Korea as commander of a reconnaissance company that conducted foot patrols in the DMZ as well as a rifle company, an 82nd airborne battalion at Fort Bragg, NC, and in Vietnam.
   Later, he commanded the 8th Division mechanized brigade in Germany and served as Assistant Division Commander of the 25th Infantry Division in Hawaii. Other assignments included ROTC duty at The Citadel in Charleston, SC, and Assistant Army Attaché at the American Embassy in Paris, France, and as a staff officer in the Personnel Directorate of the Army Staff in the Pentagon.
  In the 1970s he served as the Defense Attaché at the American Embassy in Laos where he and Mary assisted in the evacuation of U. S. citizens ahead of the fall of the government to the Communists. His last career assignment was as Defense Attaché at the American Embassy in Paris.
   During his career, he was awarded the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, The Army Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, the French National Order of Merit and other decorations.
   He also graduated from The Infantry School, Parachute School, Ranger Training, The Army Command and General Staff College and The Army War College.
   While at the War College he enrolled in Shippensburg University and earned a Masters Degree in Public Administration.
   Ros retired from the Army in 1980 as a Brigadier General, and he and Mary moved to Sarasota where they lived on Bird Key. He enjoyed sailing his 27 foot sailboat moored at the Bird Key Yacht Club in Sarasota Bay and in nearby Gulf waters. Ros served on the Board at the yacht club as Treasurer and as Rear Commodore.
   After he retired, he worked at the New College Foundation, and served as the President of the Bird Key Homeowner's Association, the Retired Officer's Club, and the Kiwanis Club where he was committed to developing The Pines of Sarasota Senior Care Community.
   He was also active in the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, Sarasota French Club, the Friends of The Selby Public Library, and Meals on Wheels.
   At home Ros enjoyed his home, pool, and his many orchids. He also greatly enjoyed his children and grandchildren.
   Ros was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Mary, and his son, Ross.
   He is survived by his daughters Mrs. Frances Kearns (Tom) of Boise, ID, and Dr. Julie Grady (Carl) of Jonesboro, AR; daughter-in-law Dr. Cindy Caldwell of Benton City, WA; five grandchildren: Tom, Cullen, Michael, Sara, Bill; and two great-grand children: Billy and Bo.
   Graveside services will be held during summer 2018 at Arlington National Cemetery.

   Ros was a gentleman of great character, an authentic leader tempered with a terrific sense of humor and uncritical demeanor who attracted adults and children and inspired them to be more than they thought was possible. He will be with family and friends every day for the rest of their lives.
