Saffici appears on line 47 of the Admiral Benson's manifest
Death certificate shows that William, a carpenter, died at
age 41 of Cardiac Infarct and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's
disease).

William D. Saffici enlisted in the Army on December 10, 1942
and volunteered for parachutist duty. On 26 Oct
1943.he was transferred from The Parachute School at Fort Benning to Hq 1st,
508th PIR
while the regiment was at Camp Mackall. NC. The regiment shipped out for
the ETO (European Theatre of Operations) just two months later.
William was captured in Normandy, France on D-Day and
remained a POW throughout the war. He was returned to military control from
Stalag 4B Muhlberg Sachsen 51-13 on 6 May 1945. He was quickly
processed and placed on Movement Orders (Group RO 1049-2-B).
Saffici boarded the USS Admiral W. S. Benson and arrived
in New York City harbor on 12 June 1945.
William died in July 1961 at age 41, in his home
area of Philadelphia, PA. |
