Elmer was born in Old Fort, North Carolina, to Bill and
Rose Schauer. In 1929, he moved with his family to Washington State where he
lived for most of his life. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army
from 1942 to 1946.
He went on to work as a brush picker for 60 years, retiring in 1999. He also
had been employed at a variety of occupations including oil refinery work,
bartending and card dealing.

cremated and the ashes were scattered over his favorite brush picking spot. |
On 14 November 1942 Pvt Schauer was transferred
from the Reception Center, Fort Lewis, Washington to the Medical Detachment,
508h PIR.
Following an AWOL during
which he went home and was recovered by the Fort Lewis authorities, Pvt
Schauer was transferred to the 541st PIR on 27 November 1943. |
