ROY A. SCHERMERHORN

Inurnment marker for Roy A Schermerhorn in Plot 1A, 15C, 38 of the Bay Pines National Cemetery, Bay Pines (Pinellas county), Florida.

Roy enlisted in the Army on 5 June 1941 and was tapped for OCS.  He was commissioned as a second lieutenant on 10 September 1942.

On 25 June 1944 1/Lt Schermerhorn was transferred from HQ 82nd Airborne Division to service Company, 508th PIR.  On 30 June he was transferred to Company E, as a platoon leader.

Lt Schermerhorn was wounded in action on 4 July 1944 but was able to later return to his unit.

On 3 January 1945 he was slightly wounded in action and evacuated.  He was later transferred to an unnamed hospital and did not return to the 508th.

On 13 April 1945 Lt Schermerhorn sailed from Southampton, England on the SS General William M. Black arriving in New York City harbor on 28 April 1945.  He is listed with other patients on page 63. Diagnosis "FCC, radius, right". State of preference Minnesota.

NOTE: FCC may stand for a Comminuted fracture, i.e., when a bone shatters into three or more pieces.
