Walter
W. Suesse. a native of Leipzig, Germany, sailed with his mother and 4
siblings from Hamburg and arrived in the United States on 8 December 1923,
see lines 10 through 15. The family was destined to go to Troy, NY.
Walter
enlisted in the Army 24 January 1936 and three years later was aboard a
troop ship that docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He was listed as a
Private in the Infantry.
That
ship apparently made its way to Panama. In he 1940 Census, Pvt Suesse
(line 74) was listed amongst the soldier stationed at Fort Clayton,
located northwest of Balboa, Panama, with the Panama Canal located nearby.
SSgt
Suesse re-enlisted on 28 December 1945. By that time he was a member
of the 508th PIR. A news article described him making his 48th jump,
this time from a new C-82, in Frankfurt. It wasn't mentioned that he
had been born about 250 miles northeast of Frankfurt.
Walter remained in the Army and retired on 1 July 1960
after more than 24 years service |
