Daniel Swankler Jr., 87, of Trafford, died Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, in Golden Living Center, Monroeville.
He was born Aug. 26, 1924, a son of the late Daniel A. Sr. and Grace Shaw Swankler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline Flohs Swankler; one brother, James Swankler; and two sisters, Mary Gildroy and Phyllis Davin.
Prior to retirement he was employed by US Steel, Edgar Thomson Works as a second helper.
He was a veteran having served in World War II, a member of St. Regis Church, in Trafford, and a past member of American Legion Post 75 of Glouchester, Va.
Daniel is survived by his loving children, Daniel Swankler III, Thomas Swankler, Caroline Swankler, Donna Loughner and Terri Swankler; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Pennsylvania WWII Veterans Bonus application submitted by
Daniel A. Swankler on 17 January 1950.
He was credited with 17 months of domestic
service and 11 months of foreign service and received a bonus of $335.

marker for Daniel and his wife Caroline in Penn Lincoln Memorial Park, North
Huntingdon Township (Westmoreland county), Pennsylvania.
According to National Archives records
Daniel enlisted in the Army at Pittsburgh, PA on 1 May 1943. For some
reason the application (above) shows an induction date of 5 August 1943, an
unusual delay.
The date of his arrival in Company H,
508th PIR is not known. On 13 January Pfc Swankler was evacuated to a
field hospital as :"injured in action" and does not appear to have returned
to the regiment.. |
