RICHARD D. THOMPSON

Grave marker for Richard D. Thompson in Union Cemetery, Rardin (Coles county), Illinois.

Richard enlisted in the Army at Peoria, IL on 2 November 1942 and was assigned to Company B, 508th PIR.

Pvt Thompson was appointed to the grade of Pfc on 5 January 1943.

Pfc Thompson parachuted into Normandy on D-Day and was injured on 26 June 1944 but was able to rejoin the company on 31 July 1944.

He also made the jump into Holland and was promoted to Cpl on 24 October 1944.

Cpl Thompson was with the regiment when it was mobilized for the Battle of The Bulge and was taken prisoner on 24 December 1944.  He was liberated from Stalag 12A on 14 June 1945.

Cpl Thompson's military decorations include the Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
