GEORGE E. THORNE

Grave markers for George E. Thorne in the Huey-Thorne Cemetery, Mannington, (Marion county), Wes Virginia.

George enlisted in the Army on 23 October 1943 at Clarksburg, WV.

After completion of jump school, Pvt Thorne was sent to the 11th Replacement Depot in England.  He was transferred to Company D, 508th PIR on 10 august 1944 as a replacement for losses sustained in the Normandy Campaign.

Pvt Thorne made the jump into Holland the following month and was wounded in action on 1 October 1944 with a small arms round in the stomach. He was awarded the Purple Heart,
