State of Iowa WWII Veterans Bonus application
submitted by Emery Van Every on 6 May 1949.
Emery was credited with 35 months of domestic duty and
23 months of overseas service for a total bonus payment of $407.50.
Note that he listed his places of service beginning
with Camp Dodge, IA, where he enlisted, followed by Camp Roberts, CA
which was probably where he received basic training.
Following that is Fort Benning, GA which must have
been for jump school and then Camp McCall [sic].
The dates of transition are not recorded but his
arrival on 27 August 1943 in Company F, 508th PIR was recorded as a
transfer from the Parachute Training Regiment. |

Grave marker for Emery Van Every and spouse in Cedar
Cemetery, Rinard (Calhoun county), Iowa.
Emery
enlisted in the Army at Camp Dodge, Herrold, IA on 5 March 1943.
On 27 August 1943, Pvt Van every was transferred from
the Parachute Training Regiment to co F, 508th PIR.
He was wounded in action on 4 July 1944 in France and
evacuated. The timing was fortuitous as while being treated in
England, he married Eleanor May Cranston in the Leodegarius Church of
England in Basford, Nottingham. It is she who shares this grave
with him.
He was ultimately discharged on 4 December 1945 with
military decorations including the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf
Clusters and the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for
participation in Normandy assault.
His wife and their nine-month-old son arrived in New
York City on the Queen Mary on 21 April 1946. |
