EMERY A. VAN EVERY

State of Iowa WWII Veterans Bonus application submitted by Emery Van Every on 6 May 1949.

Emery was credited with 35 months of domestic duty and 23 months of overseas service for a total bonus payment of $407.50.

Note that he listed his places of service beginning with Camp Dodge, IA, where he enlisted, followed by Camp Roberts, CA which was probably where he received basic training.

Following that is Fort Benning, GA which must have been for jump school and then Camp McCall [sic].

The dates of transition are not recorded but his arrival on 27 August 1943 in Company F, 508th PIR was recorded as a transfer from the Parachute Training Regiment.

Grave marker for Emery Van Every and spouse in Cedar Cemetery, Rinard (Calhoun county), Iowa.

Emery enlisted in the Army at Camp Dodge, Herrold, IA on 5 March 1943.

On 27 August 1943, Pvt Van every was transferred from the Parachute Training Regiment to co F, 508th PIR.

He was wounded in action on 4 July 1944 in France and evacuated.  The timing was fortuitous as while being treated in England, he married Eleanor May Cranston in the Leodegarius Church of England in Basford, Nottingham.  It is she who shares this grave with him.

He was ultimately discharged on 4 December 1945 with military decorations including the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Bronze Service Arrowhead device awarded for participation in Normandy assault.

His wife and their nine-month-old son arrived in New York City on the Queen Mary on 21 April 1946.
