ADOLFO F. VARGAS

Adolfo registered for the draft in San Francisco, CA on 16 Octane 1940 and was inducted into the Army at San Francisco, on 28 November 1942.

Pvt Vargas' arrival in the 508th PIR does not appear in available records.  However on 29 October 1943 the Company G morning report stated that he had been "relieved from attachment to Rear Det 508th Prcht Inf and assigned to this Co as of 26 Oct 43.

Pvt Vargas was injured on D-Fay, June 6, 1944 when he apparently engaged in hand-to-hand combat and was evacuated to the 91st General Hospital in Headington near Oxford, England.  The hospital admission files indicate "Diagnosis: First Location: Fingers, generally; Causative Agent: Bayonet."

The 91st General Hospital was activated on 20 June 1943 at Schick Hospital, Clinton, IA and was sent overseas in March 1944.

Of interest is the fact that this hospital's new location in England had only been established in late April.  A portion of it's history stated:

10 June 1944 – a first Hospital Train arrived with 311 patients, of which 254 were litter cases. The first of these patients reached the receiving office from the railhead at 1755 hours and the last one was sorted through at 1940 hours. The entire process of, receiving, triage, and movement to appropriate wards was accomplished smoothly and with a minimum of confusion. The wounded consisted largely of paratroops, infantry, engineers, glider flying personnel, landing craft crews, and some regular ground forces. Among these patients were also a few US and British Navy personnel. Reception of these casualties marked the accomplishment of the ultimate primary mission of this organization exactly 10 days short of the first Anniversary of its activation.

Adolfo may well have been one of the 311 patients arriving that day.

He was treated for his wounds and released from the hospital that same month.  He returned to duty with the Service Company on 29 June 1944. Following further recuperation he was transferred back to Company G on 17 July and 5 days later learned that he was promoted to Pfc.

On 1 October 1944 Adolfo was promoted to Corporal.

Cpl Vargas was hospitalized again on 31 October ad classed as a non-combat injury. He returned to duty on 4 December.

He was discharged on 13 November 1945.

On 27 August 1953 Adolfo petitioned to become a naturalized citizen and q2ith the affidavit of witnesses his citizenship was granted on 11 September 1953.
