MARION F. WHITING

   Marion F. Whiting died Jan. 8, 2001, at age 88. No service was held.
   Mr. Whiting was born Nov. 11, 1912, in Portland. He graduated from Grant High School and Oregon State University. In 1939, he married Josephine S. Strayer; she died in 1990.
   In 1943, Mr. Whiting enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II with the 82nd Airborne Division.
   Following the war, he worked as an electrical engineer with the Bonneville Power Administration, retiring about 32 years ago.
   Mr. Whiting operated the Portland Junior Chamber of Commerce Ski School at Mt. Hood.
   Survivors include his daughter, Judyth Flaten; and two grandchildren. Disposition is by cremation.
   The family suggests remembrances to Shriners Children's Hospital.
   Arrangements were by Caldwell's Colonial Chapel.

Marion married Josephine Bentz Strayer in Portland (Multnomah), OR on 7 August 1949.

 

He registered for the draft in Forest Grove, OR on 16 October 1940 and was inducted into the Army at Portland, OR on 23 October 1943.

In December 1943, WWII Hospital Admission Card Files, show that Pvt Whiting was hospitalized with Scarlet fever.  He was returned to duty on January 1944.

On 10 August 1944 Pvt Whiting was transferred from the 11th Replacement Depot to Company A, 508th PIR,

He was promoted to Pfc on 1 December 1944 and to Sgt on 19 January 1945.

On 11 July 1945, TSgt Whiting was awarded a Good Conduct Medal.
