Garfield Robert Wilkinson, age 82, of
Salisbury, Maryland, died Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at his home.
He was born March 10, 1920 in Laurel, Delaware, to Russell James
and Sadie Elliott Wilkinson. He was a World War II Veteran of the 82nd
Airborne Division and was recognized with distinction for his
participation in three major campaigns, Normandy, Holland and the Battle
of the Bulge. As a Staff Sergeant in the 82nd Airborne, he received the
highest combat infantry recognition, the Combat Infantry Badge, and was
awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
He was an active member of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment
Association, a Life Member of VFW Post #194 and a member of the American
Land Developers Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley F. Martin Wilkinson, in
2001.
Survivors include two sons, Garfield R. Wilkinson II and fiancee
Carolyn Sliger of Lake Ridge, Virginia, and Gary Wilkinson and wife Lori
of Sanford, North Carolina; one stepson, Warren Breeden and wife, Martha
of Madison, Virginia; three daughters, Sandra Tarman and husband, Aubrey
of Springfield, Virginia, Theresa Harward of Rolesville, North Carolina,
and Dana Pearson and husband Dwayne of Springdale, Arkansas; 10
grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery Arlington,
Virginia with Military Honors on February 11 at 1 p.m. |
