Donald M. Biles
although in Company I, isn't on the list, perhaps because he was
still recuperating from a wound suffered in Normandy.
Seen here at left, he is in a leg cast due to being hit by German
machine gun fire.
As his daughter recounted in a tale that Don told, "coming in over
Normandy the flight was very turbulent. Dad was in charge of the
men on this jump. Every one was throwing up. Dad was the
last to jump but he slipped in the vomit (his words) and it took
a few seconds for him to get up and jump.
Someone told him he was going to be far apart from his other men
because of the time lag. In fact it took him two days until they
reconnected. He had to hide in the bushes during that
time.
Another recollection was that after reconnecting "he tried to pull a member of his regiment off the
street during German artillery fire. This young soldier was
mortally wounded. Dad was shot at the time as he dragged the
body."
