PARKER PATTER -  [December 30, 1943?]

RAILROAD STRIKE CALLED OFF

WASHINGTON  DEC. 3O
RAILROAD STRIKE CALLED OFF

Three operating unions after resisting previous offers of arbitration agreed Wednesday to call off the nation wide strike which had been set for tomorrow - Thursday. The  calling off of the rail strike and the return of steel workers to their jobs pending negotiation of a new contract cleared away two ominous clouds which rose over the Capitol just before Christmas.

NAZI DEATH KNELL SOUNDED:

With the hour of the Allied invasion of Europe approaching, the Germans sounded double invasion plans Wednesday reporting a series of British Commando thrusts on the Channel Islands within 22 miles French Normandy in the North and big scale massing of Allied ships at Gibraltar in the south. DNB, the. German news agency asserted that British Commandos had stabbed twice at the Nazi occupied island of Sark within the last three days, presumably in the quest of information on German plans to counter the coming blow. At the same time the German radio reported the heaviest ship movements at Gibraltar since the Italian invasion. It said a convoy of 77 ships mostly 10,000 ton vessels had arrived from the Atlantic. The Swiss radio said considerable Germen troop movements took place in France over the Christmas weekend.

NOTE: One of the best- things that could have happened to Roy's little boys'- did! It's the PA system which gives out with the highbrow and jive.  It was unexpected so it was and it is a delightful surprise.

Prime Beef: The blankety-blank officiousness of those so and so MP's who keep pushing palpitating Privates all over the joint.  Here's hoping that all the MP's who have children, have them grow up to be MP's.

PEPPERED PATTER

There wasn't any fanfare, no big pomp, every thing was still, But the Parker steamed softly out of New York Harbor on a cold, grey morning with one of the biggest stories you or your reporter will ever know. Part of its cargo was a task force - shipment # O- 246-AA - you and I, The story? It should have been an inspiring anecdote on an American boy moving into the theatre of operations, but as might have been expected, # O- 246-AA had a different tale to tell. To even the most observing there was little if anything which suggested that here was a regiment nearing a Zero hour. Griping was normal, spirits, (Physical - the other stuff wasn't available), were high and the swearing had s new tang to It.
