(31 Dee. 43) The date line is suited ideally to the writer's frame* of
mind. Certainly the nadir of American medicine
has been reached in the "newspaper doctor", if I may coin a phrase.
The Logan Clendening’s and Paul De Kruif's have been sore points, disowned by both the journalistic and the
medical professions. However,
my resolve to be a good soldier and obey order must be kept.
Since there is no medical officer lower in the scheme of things than I,
not even the "out" of passing the buck Is open to me. So I'll tell all
of you scalawags how to stay healthy whether you like it or not.
That
delightful topic of dinnertime talk is indubitably uppermost in your
minds now.
Mal de mer, better known as seasickness, is what a doctor
is no good for. However, the world keeps branding us charlatans and
all kinds of nasty names of non-jumpers for not being able to cure
seasickness, colds, end hangovers. After all, who the hell really
wants seasickness cured? The guy who does not get it certainly does not
care;
furthermore, he can now be conspicuous in his manly indifference
to the pitching and rolling of the most unseaworthy dinghy, On the
other hand the wretch who can not hear a steamboat hoarsely greet its
sisters without gettin' the dry heaves, really enjoys the
attention
commanded by his wretched state. Take away from him the distinction
of being the man who deserves the Purple Heart before reaching
combat and .he is lost.
Of course all this stuff is just to bill space,
I really shot my wad yesterday when I yelled myself hoarse passing
away about seasickness in various company areas. If you really want
to know about seasickness send an envelope with your best girl's address
on it to the author.

when Germany Is defeated but as her defeat seems at hand". He discounted the possibility that the Japanese can as they have
threatened, launch offensive operations in 1944," I don’t quite see how
they are going on the offensive where they are in contact in the Pacific,
he said, "what they do in China, Manchuria or even Burma is some thing different.
