SPC COREY J. KOWALL

Spc. Corey J. Kowall, 20, of Murfreesboro, Tenn. died September 20, 2009 in Zabul province of injuries sustained when his vehicle overturned, officials said.  Also killed was Spc. Damon G. Winkleman, a medic.  The men were rushing to assist a convoy that encountered an improvised explosive device.

Spc Kowall was assigned to Alpha Company in the 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.  Kowall was an infantryman and had only been in Afghanistan for about 5-weeks when he was killed.

Kowall's awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Afghan Campaign Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Expert Infantry Badge and the Parachutists Badge.
