SGT LOUIS A. VISNESKY

Louis enlisted in the Army at Pittsburgh, PA on 14 October 1940 with an expressed desire to serve in a cavalry unit and was assigned to Troop G, 3rd Cavalry, Fort Meyers, VA.

He later volunteered for parachutist duty and following completion of jump school, Pvt Visnesky was transferred from the :Parachute School to Company F, 508th PIR on 6 August 1943.

The regiment at that time was in the midst of advanced training at Camp Mackall and his current state of readiness may not have been sufficient.  Pvt Visnesky was transferred to Replacement Station 970 on 20 August 1943.

He was apparently was then to another PIR, perhaps the 509th but records are incomplete.

Sgt Visnesky was mentioned in a news article reporting that he was MIA

A 21-year-old Kittanning paratrooper, Louis Visnesky, is missing in action in Italy, according to word from the ar department received in Kittanning

Remarkably, no follow-up articles have been found stating that he had been killed in action or covering his funeral when the remains were repatriated after the end of hostilities.

This brief record of his burial in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Kittanning (Armstrong county), PA.  is the sole reference found to date of his burial.  It is the same cemetery that his parents were buried in as well.

Pennsylvania WWI Veterans Bonus application completed by his mother in 1950 as the beneficiary for his payment.  She received the full bonus of $500 for his service.
