War Stories
are told by George D. Fairman, Jr. [l] and his former Battalion C.O., Thomas J. B. Shanley while Tom's wife Lucille is pretty sure she has heard that one before.
George was a Section Sergeant and Forward Observer with the Battalion's 81 mm Mortar platoon in Normandy, Holland and during the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium.
Tom Shanley commanded over 400 paratroopers from various organizations during the Hill 30 battle in Picauville, Normandy during the first few days of the invasion.
Their heroic stand on Hill prevented the enemy from reinforcing their troops at Utah and Omaha Beaches.

The Patriots Point memorial exhibit included the Carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) and the Destroyer USS Laffey (DD-724) which supported the D-Day landings at Normandy.
Almost hidden from view is the USS Clamagore (SS 43) submarine.  It's black conning tower can be seen between the Yorktown's bow and the pier.  The ship on the right is the USS Savannah (AOR-4), a Wichita-class replenishment oiler.  The ship was struck from the Naval Register on 29 October 1998 and was scrapped.
