[The Courier-Gazette, McKinney, TX, 28 Sep 1950, Thu, Page 10]

[Note:  Doris was living in the "Far East Command", probably in Japan, as many other wives did.  The geographic closeness of the two counties meant the men could occasionally get to visit their family, not to mention that the cost of living in Japan was quite low.]

Texas.

2nd Lt. Milam joined Company A, 508th PIR in Stavelot, Belgium on 2 Feb 1945 after being transferred from XVIII Corps (Airborne).  The regiment was transferred to Sissonne, France 20 days later and saw no further combat action during WW-II.  The XVIII Corps (Airborne) had participated in Operation Market-Garden but it is not known whether Lt. Milam gained any combat experience during that operation.   A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Class of 1944, Lt. Milam could not have been in the ETO very long.

On 6 April 1945, James was promoted to the grade of 1st Lieutenant while the regiment was still billeted at Sissonne, France.

On June 24 1950, North Korea invaded the south and the U.S. quickly became involved.  At that time the 1st Cavalry Division, with its three regiments—5th, 7th, and 8th---were stationed in Japan.  Between July 15 and July 22 the U.S. Army sent troop ships to P’ohang-dong north of Pusan  The 1st Cavalry Division probably was aboard one of those troop carriers

Now a Captain, James Milam was in command of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment.

Captain Milam was killed in action on September 5, 1950. For his leadership and valor, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Korean War Service Medal in addition to other decorations awarded during WW-II.

Captain Milam was a classmate of Major Barry Albright at West Point and both served in the 508th during WW-II.  Albright was killed in action on November 5, 1950 - two months after Capt Milam.
